Professional development is an uphill battle. Between workplace drama, feeling “stuck” in your role because you’re not advancing, or the stress incurred by your job, it can be challenging to find the time to grow in your skills. Particularly if your company is short on mentorship or other tools to help you grow, it’s tempting to hunker down and keep busy with what you’ve been given — but eventually, and maybe right now, this mounting frustration is going to eat away at you.

I want to stop that now! Workplace burnout is a real thing, and it can stem from a variety of sources:

  • You’re watching others around you with similar (or fewer) skills move up.
  • You’re feeling unfulfilled in your work with no clear way to make it better.
  • You’re tackling imposter syndrome at every turn, affecting your motivation not only in your current role, but in any projects that may encourage you to stretch yourself.
  • You’re overworked. Period.

One of the biggest things that stops us from making new strides at work is our weaknesses, both real and perceived. And at this point, I must jump in to tell you this incredible, but rarely highlighted, truth.
